Battlefleet: Pacific War Editor's Review
I remember the times when I played Battlefleet on paper during class or on the board at home. Well, those times are over now, because a new cool game called 'Battlefleet: Pacific War' exists now. This game is a naval strategy game where all the ships, planes, and submarines can move. The trial version contains several missions, which you can play in order to evaluate the game. Depending on the mission you choose, you have to conquer enemy ports, defend friendly ports, destroy ships, or secure a transport convoy. It takes a little time to get used to playing the game, especially if you don't read the tutorial. The game is turn-based. This means that you have to move all your ships before the computer takes its turn. Although this is a logical choice, I was a bit confused at first waiting for the computer to move. Double-clicking the main map will position you over the ships that weren't moved yet. Of course, you can also tell any of your ships to stand ground. Attacking the enemy ships or ports is done by right clicking the desired target.
Don't get fooled by the fancy background image of the main menu. This game doesn't feature any advanced graphics, or other things like that. However, you are bound to have a nice time playing, because the game-play is good. Don't be disappointed, if you don't win the first time you play. I first won after playing about five missions.
Pluses: The player can purchase new ships during the game.
Drawbacks / flaws: There are some buttons that appear in the wrong places. For example, after you finish a mission, a transparent OK button shows on the top right corner. This button is not easy to spot, so it took me quite a while to figure out where it was.
In conclusion: This is a good expansion of the classical Battlefleet game. It allows you to move your ships, making the game more realistic.
